Extreme Close-Up
Extreme close up shots are even further exaggerating a person's expression and reminding the audience that something is amiss or something important will happen or is happening. An extreme close up is when most of the frame is filled by a subject's face, either because the subject is framed tightly or scaled up in size. These have a powerful effect as they convey everything the character has left unsaid by focusing on all of the emotion written on their face. This also allows the actor to develop a strong emotional connection to the audience because they can intimately see all of the details on an actor’s face they wouldn’t normally see. When used properly, these extreme close-ups can mark a pivotal moment, object or motif of the film, convey emotion, play up a character’s subtle actions or small details, relate the story back to viewers or to change the storytelling pace.
